Harp Seals!!!!!!!!!

FIVE FAKE FACTS!

Harp Seals have the scientific name Pagophilus groenlandicus. This translates to "Ice-lover from Iceland." Harp seals may also be called saddleback seals, because of their back marking. The harp seal has a "silvery-gray" body, but when they are babies their coats are white. Their breeding grounds are in Newfoundland, the Greenland Sea, and the White Sea. Baby Harp Seals are wanted for their white coat and there are hundreds of thousands killed every day. Harp seals are highly intelligent and have been trained to play the harp. They are very elusive and secretive so this has never been photographed. Also, when they are adults, they have a mark on their back that resembles a harp. The mark is how they got their name however; as teaching them was not possible until recently. The harp seals are very social. They usually go on water, but are sometimes on land. Harp seals have very bad eyesight but have such a developed sense of smell that they recognize their young by its smell. Harp seals may live up to 20 years in the wild.
